A fire at the Pioneer Hotel (on the left) in December 1970 killed 29 people. A 16-year-old Mexican/African American boy was later imprisoned for suspected arson and was released just last month, April 2013.
The building was renovated in the late 1970s and now includes an Ike’s Coffee Shop on the corner of Stone Avenue and Pennington Street, which is where I have spent quite a bit of my free time this year while working on a project downtown. Cool stuff.
